How Today's Rich Give
What you need to know to raise a lot more money from wealthy donors
*Previously called How the New Rich Give and renamed by its new publisher, Jossey-Bass.
"This is an excellent synthesis of fundraising information about the new rich.... All fundraisers should listen to this recording."
Advancing Philanthropy magazine
The new rich control billions of dollars and they are willing philanthropists. Yet very few organizations know how to approach them effectively. The key is to understand that the new rich are different. "They think differently, they act differently and most importantly, they give differently. To raise money from them successfully you have to understand who they are and what they expect from your organization."
This double CD, recorded live during one of Harvey McKinnon's popular seminars, outlines what every fundraiser needs to know to raise more money from high-tech donors, social entrepreneurs and venture philanthropists.
"Harvey's exclellent workshop 'How Today's Rich Give' reminds us that philanthropy has rtremendous opportunity to gorw. He even explains how to do it in his inimitable and humorous way."
–Tim Draimin, executive director, Tides Canada

Review of How Today's Rich Give which appeared in Advancing Philanthropy
This is an excellent synthesis of fundraising information about the new rich, who comprise about six percent of the United States ’ population and have assets of $1 million or more, including 350,000 with a net worth of $10 million, and 267 billionaires. They include executives from large companies and the financial services industry, consultants and service providers, employees whose companies have gone public, people who sold their businesses, athletes, Hollywood stars, dry cleaners, auto dealers, and some of our neighbors.
McKinnon divides the new rich into three broad categories (social entrepreneurs, venture philanthropists, and high tech donors), describing the needs and expectations of each group and the barriers and opportunities with each. He asks and answers such pertinent questions as these: How do you reach new donors? What questions should you ask yourself before approaching one of these prospects? How will a donor feel about your organizations? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your “askers’?
The number of new rich increases every year, as does the number of philanthropic opportunities. All fundraisers should listen to this recording, preferably following along in the outline from the Power Point presentation. The print version will reward those looking for elaboration and documentation not available in the lecture.
